Dentistry
Barossa Vet Service is proud to be offering equine dentistry again. We know that regular preventative health care for our horses is an important part of the service a local vet offers and we are wanting to focus on this and assist you as much as possible.
Our equine dentistry consultation will include a full health check, sedation to allow complete oral exam and an efficient and reduced stress performance float for your horse or pony. For geldings or stallions a complimentary sheath clean to check for beans or other issues is included. All clients will receive a dental record chart for you to keep.
In addition to this, it is a perfect time to check the status of your horse’s vaccination and worming. Vaccinations can be updated at the time of a dental and can save you the hassle of giving a needle.
Health Checks & Lameness Exam
Health checks are an important part of your horse's regular care. We are able to perform a full check including a basic lameness work up whether at the clinic or on property. At this time any ongoing concerns can be raised and are able to be investigated by the veterinarian.
Basic lameness work up can be performed at this time, however, if radiographs are required we will refer to Roseworthy Veterinary College.
Gelding
Gelding is a routine procedure in equine practice and is normally performed between 6 and 12 months of age.
Please ensure your horse’s tetanus vaccination status is up to date.
There is always some risk with anaesthesia and it is important to organise a safe environment to perform the procedure and choose a day where the weather is appropriate. Please call us to discuss these specific requirements.
Hendra Vaccination
In South Australia we are lucky and our risk of Hendra virus is quite low. However, vaccination is recommended for horses that are travelling to the eastern states of Australia for competition purposes.
Further information on the disease is available here: ava.com.au/hendra-virus.
Our large animal veterinarians are registered to administer the vaccination and all horses receiving the vaccination must be microchipped.
If you would like to organise vaccination for your horse or have further questions please contact the clinic.
Microchipping
Microchipping of horses is becoming more commonplace and is a straight forward procedure. All of our vets are trained in the placement of microchips and are registered with Studbook Australia.
If formal documentation is required to confirm identity of the horse this can be completed at the time of implantation.
We have secure facilities to perform the procedure or alternatively we can travel to you.
Pre-Purchase Examination
Pre-purchase examination provides some assurance to the purchaser that a horse is in good condition and is not carrying any ongoing issues prior to purchase. A thorough physical examination is performed and basic lameness work up as well as blood work if requested by the purchaser.
At this time we are unable to perform ECG monitoring or radiography, if these are required, we recommend Roseworthy Veterinary College.
